Education

  • Gardens – Heritage Gardens: Assisting in the greenhouse, spring planting, weeding, readying gardens for District events. (Spring through Fall)
    Special considerations: Willing to work outdoors in hot, humid weather.

  • Rain Garden – Weeding once a week.
    Special considerations: Willing to work outdoors in hot, humid weather.

  • Outdoor Cooking – Cooking over an open fire for Living History school programs. (Fall)
    Special Considerations: Must be able to lift 30 pounds. Will be cooking outdoors over campfire in all weather conditions. Required to dress in appropriate pioneer clothing (will be provided by the BCCD.) Will get smoky, dirty.

Habitat Restoration

  • Seed Collecting – Collecting seed heads from prairie plants, sorting seed, cleaning seed. All equipment and training will be provided. (Year round)

  • Brush Clearing – Clearing brush and moving into piles. All equipment will be provided. (Year round)
    Special Considerations: Must be willing to work in various weather conditions.

  • Goat Caretaking – Feeding, changing bedding, set up electric fencing for four goats. Duties will vary depending on season. All equipment and training will be provided. (Year round)
    Special Considerations: Familiarity or experience with livestock highly desired.

  • Wildlife Monitoring – Monitoring aquatic turtle traps and bird counting at various conservation areas. All equipment and some training will be provided.
    (Spring through Fall)
    Special Considerations: Strong wildlife identification skills highly desired.

  • Planting – Planting a variety of prairie plants at various conservation areas. All equipment and training will be provided. (Spring through Summer)
    Special Considerations: Must be willing to work in various weather conditions.

Maintenance

  • Trail Maintenance – Cutting brush along trails at various conservation areas using tree branch clippers. All equipment will be provided. (Year round)
    Special Considerations: No chainsaws will be used. Must be willing to work in various weather conditions.

  • Conservation Area Clean Up – Litter removal and clean up of sites after severe weather (removing downed branches, etc.) All equipment will be provided. (Year round)
    Special Considerations: Must be willing to work in various weather conditions.

  • Building Trades – Previous experience in carpentry, plumbing or as an electrician. Various work includes (but is not limited to) building bird houses, picnic tables, shelving, etc. All equipment will be provided. (Year round)
    Special Considerations: Attach a copy of any certification to Volunteer Application, if able.

Clerical

  • Office Work – Roger Gustafson Nature Center (Belvidere): Customer service, answering phones, using cash register, etc. All training will be provided. (Year round)
    Special Considerations: Must be customer service oriented. Fluency in Spanish highly desired.

  • Kishwaukee Bend Conservation Area (Garden Prairie): Answering phones in afternoon, possibly light computer work.
    Special Considerations: Must be customer service oriented, experience with Microsoft Office desirable.
